GSM NETWORK AND ELEVATORS
It is always an irritation when you enter
elevator cabin and you mobile call gets disconnected. Many a time you wait in
your building lobby because you are on a mobile call and you do not want it to
be disconnected. When GSM signal can
reach to your bed room why can't it reach elevators? Have you ever irritated
due to this? It is not the disconnection but continuity of your discussion that
bother us. Waiting in lobby just to complete call or some time you can't get in
lift in morning delaying you to leave
for office or some time for important flight.
While it is irritating, Elevator is not to be
blamed entirely. Elevator is installed in four walls of RCC which is called
lift well or lift shaft. The entry of signal as such is difficult and signals
are weak. Even this weaker signal can penetrate, if you notice till time
elevator doors are open you can continue conversation but moment doors close signal is lost. It is due to fact that the
elevator is complete metal cage and thus any signal that penetrate the lift
shaft get grounded when it come in contact with metal cage.

The problem can be solved by
putting receiver antenna and on elevator top and a donor antenna inside
elevator. This is a easy solution if signal is strong in lift shaft. For high
rise building or in case where signal in lift shaft are not strong one may
need to put a booster at top building
and some repeater in the shaft. This will ensure that you get uninterrupted
signal while moving in and out of lift.

Speed of the lift can some time affect the
signal and when you put this solution you must also ensure that all spectrum
are covered to ensure all service provider signals reach in elevators else it
can happen that particular mobile work inside the elevator while some other may not, but it is not
difficult or costly.
